Electroschlag Vol.16
Lyset fra Nedenunder – Ernst van der Loo
“A piece based on sound materials originally generated for another of my electronic pieces.
These materials are taken through a dramatic amount of transformations and are presented in a more or less chronological manner.
The composer takes the listener on a thoroughly planned ‘walk’ through the garden or, depending on your appreciation, junkyard of the resulting materials.
This piece was premiered during the 3 day SoniC rhymes festival in The Hague, The Netherlands in June 2003. Recent plays include a concert at College of William & Mary in Williamsburg (VA), USA on the 7th of September 2009.
Original program notes consisted of just the following lines:
“A raven sings my last song
as the wolves howl their goodbyes
The funeral moon glows strongly now
for I am nearly there “
Release date: Jan 1, 2003″
Quanta – Léon Spek
“Quanta was originally a quadrophonic piece, for this release a stereo mixdown was created.
The composition was structured using a 5 x 5 matrix from which sounds were taken roughly according to electron distribution probabilities from a hydrogen atom.
The sounds in the matrix were created from single starting layer that was processed 4 times to fill the 5 x 5 matrix.”
Plankton – Nanda Milbreta
“Plankton performed on PriZm by Wen-Chin Fu, Mei-Yi Lee and Nanda Milbreta.
PriZm is a new music instrument for multiple musicians, built by Nanda (http://www.neon-landa.com).
It consists of wooden frame holding 19 suspended aluminium and steel sticks and tubes.
With amplification, musicians can ‘zoom’ into the sounds and explore the unique possibilities.
Using a wide range of percussive playing techniques a rich palette of sounds reveals itself, ranging from the well-known chimes and bell-like sounds to unique and mysterious multi-layered tones.
It is about 2.5m wide and 1.70 high and therefore can be best played by 2 to 3 musicians at a time.
PriZm also has its “PriZm by night” light effect that harmonizes with the sounds and creates a dreamlike atmosphere.
Thanks to: Mei-Yi, Wen-Chin and Léon”
Study #1 for field recordings – Ernst van der Loo
“Study made for the field recording workshop at Worm in Rotterdam in December 2009.
The piece is constructed with 2 field recordings that I made in 2007 in Bærum, Norway. I used a cinematic approach (as in referring to camera techniques used in the cinema) focusing in and distorting the sound world of that specific spot in several different ways.
Part I is an (almost) untouched recording from the spot. Part II is an untouched recording of an extreme focus on one of the elements of that specific spot. The nice part is that the extreme focus on one part actually reveals a lot of other stuff happening at that spot.. Part III is an artificial reconstruction of the sound world of that specific place. Part IV is a reconstruction of the spot how it might be as remembered after years, or basically a second view on recreating it artificially. At the end there is a small Coda referring back to part II.”
Tokamak – Léon Spek
“Tokamak was created with sampled sounds from Léon Spek’s circuit bended instrument. The samples were treated with SuperCollider and manually edited in time to form the piece.”
Persóna – Thoranna D. Björnsdottír (aka Trouble)
“Ég var að hugsa um það sem maður heyrir ásamt því sem maður ekki heyrir…það sem blundar í undirmeðvitundinni.”
